Cassius Raymes was raised with the clergy on the Isle of Ulan. He never knew his birth parents. He was left in the custody of the abbot of a monastery located on the isle. His tutelage as a cleric turned towards the realm of healing when the aforementioned abbot fell ill to a strange wasting illness. Despite the best efforts of the other clergymen and despite Cassius’ fervent prayers, the abbot passed away. It was this event that gave birth to the belief that nothing should be beyond the ability to be healed and the determination to become the most talented healer in Umbrandin.
While he holds to the Church’s beliefs as a clergyman, he will turn a blind eye to the use of non-holy magic if the ends it is used towards either helps prevent harm or heal others. He is not a pacifist by any means. He believes that, much like combating disease, the best form of healing is to prevent harm from ever reaching its target. If that means hunting down a rampaging band of orcs and bringing death to them, well, that will still ultimately result in fewer deaths and less harm than if he waited for them to attack a defenseless village.
As he enters his middle years he has discovered that he has reached the limits of what the clergyman on the Isle of Ulan can teach him about healing and so he has set out into the world seeking out both those with knowledge of new forms of healing and those who are suffering, so that he might be able to perform good works and spread the faith of the Church. He has banded together with his present company as they seem to proactively seek out sources of harm to others, which holds to Cassius’ belief in prevention as the better form of healing. Not only that, but since they seem to have a knack for getting into trouble and bringing injury upon themselves it certainly gives him ample practice with his art.
